About the Board

The Optometrists Act 1940 was repealed on 20 April 2007 when the Optometrists Act 2005 came into effect. The new Act becomes the legislation by which the Optometrists Registration Board of Western Australia is established.

The Board is the statutory regulatory body of Western Australia responsible to the Minister for Health for the administration of the Act.

The Board consists of 8 members, appointed by the Minister for Health of whom 6 are optometrists, one is a consumer representative and one is a legal practitioner.

Tenure of the Board

A member of the Board is usually appointed for a period not exceeding 3 years as may be specified in his/her instrument of appointment but is eligible for re-appointment. However, a member of the Board is not eligible to hold office for more than 9 years, unless otherwise approved by the Minister.
